蔵造りの一番街から菓子屋横丁へと続く、思わず歩く速度がゆっくりになる味わい深い細道。その途中に佇む「亀之助商店」は、100年以上経つ伝統的建造物の中で、手ぬぐいを中心とした和雑貨を販売するお店です。
店先には季節に合わせた手ぬぐいが下がっており、通るたびに変わるその表情を楽しむ人も多いとか。
お店の最大の魅力は、なんといっても店主ご自身がデザインされたオリジナル手ぬぐい。川越のシンボルである時の鐘や蔵造り、うなぎ、さつまいも、菓子などをモチーフに、伝統的でありながらもどこかモダンで飽きのこないデザインが特徴です。観光客のお土産としても人気が高く、「川越を意識した手ぬぐい」を求めて訪れる人が後を絶ちません。
手ぬぐい以外にも、木のコマやけん玉、お手玉などのなつかしい玩具、西部劇さながらのロウマッチ、千社札デザインの甚平など、大人も童心に帰って楽しめる品々が並びます。ご夫婦で切り盛りする温かい雰囲気も、多くの人を惹きつける理由の一つです。

A tenugui reflecting the current season is displayed in front of the shop, and many people enjoy seeing how its expression changes each time they pass by.
The shop’s biggest appeal is undoubtedly the original tenugui designed by the owner himself. Featuring motifs of Kawagoe’s symbols like the Toki no Kane bell, Kurazukuri warehouses, eel, sweet potatoes, and traditional sweets, the designs are traditional yet somehow modern and timeless. They are highly popular as souvenirs among tourists, and many visitors come specifically seeking these “tenugui inspired by Kawagoe”.
