時の鐘は、小江戸川越のシンボルとして、蔵造りの街並みにそびえる木造の鐘楼です。現在の塔は、明治26年（1893年）の川越大火の翌年に再建されたもので、高さは約16メートルあります。
初代の鐘楼は寛永元年（1624年）頃、川越藩主・酒井忠勝によって建てられたと伝えられています。以来、約400年にわたり、川越の街に時を告げ続けてきました。
現在も1日6回（午前6時、正午、午後3時、午後6時など）に鐘が撞かれ、その澄んだ音色が蔵造りの街並みに響き渡ります。この鐘の音は、「残したい日本の音風景100選」にも選定されています。
鐘楼のすぐ裏手には薬師神社があり、境内から見上げる時の鐘もまた格別です。また、周辺には多くの土産物店や飲食店が集まっており、川越観光の拠点として最適な場所です。

The Toki no Kane (Bell Tower) is the symbol of Little Edo Kawagoe, a wooden bell tower standing tall amidst the Kurazukuri streetscape. The current tower was rebuilt in 1894, the year after the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893, and stands approximately 16 meters high.
The original bell tower is said to have been built around 1624 by Tadakatsu Sakai, the lord of Kawagoe Castle. Since then, it has been announcing the time to the people of Kawagoe for nearly 400 years.
Even today, the bell is rung six times a day (at 6:00 AM, noon, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM, etc.), and its clear chime resonates through the Kurazukuri streetscape. The sound of this bell has been selected as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan to be preserved.”
Behind the bell tower is Yakushi Shrine, and the view of the Toki no Kane from the shrine grounds is especially spectacular. The area is also home to many souvenir shops and restaurants, making it an ideal base for sightseeing in Kawagoe.
