「大澤家住宅」は、蔵造りの街並み（一番街）に現存する、川越で最も古い蔵造りの建物です。寛政4年（1792年）に、近江国出身の呉服商「近江屋」が建てた店舗兼住宅で、国の重要文化財に指定されています 。
明治26年（1893年）の川越大火では、町の3分の1が焼失する中、この建物だけが焼け残りました 。その防火性の高さが実証されたことで、川越の商人たちがこぞって蔵造りの商家を建てるようになり、現在の蔵造りの街並みが形成されるきっかけとなった、歴史的に極めて重要な建造物です 。
外観は、黒漆喰で仕上げられた重厚なものですが、2階の窓は漆喰で塗り固められた「土格子」と呼ばれる珍しい形式で、川越ではここでしか見られません 。内部は、厚さ30cmもある壁や、火災時に住居部分と分離できる防火扉など、当時の防火に対する工夫を随所に見ることができます 。
現在、1階は民芸品やお土産品を扱う店舗「小松屋」として現役で使用されており、誰でも気軽に中に入って、歴史を感じながら買い物を楽しむことができます 。

“Osawa-ke Jutaku” is the oldest existing Kurazukuri building in Kawagoe, located on the Kurazukuri streetscape (Ichibangai). Built in 1792 by a kimono merchant from Omi Province called “Omiya,” it served as a combined shop and residence and is now designated as a National Important Cultural Property .
During the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893, which destroyed one-third of the town, this building alone survived . Its proven high fire resistance prompted many Kawagoe merchants to build Kurazukuri merchant houses, making this building a historically crucial catalyst for the formation of the present-day Kurazukuri townscape .
The exterior is imposing, finished in black plaster, but the windows on the second floor feature a rare form called “Dogoshi” (earthen lattice) , made by coating lattice with plaster, and can only be seen here in Kawagoe . Inside, you can observe various fire-prevention techniques of the time, including walls 30cm thick and fire doors designed to separate the living quarters in case of fire .
Currently, the first floor is actively used as a shop “Komatsuya” selling folk crafts and souvenirs . Anyone can easily enter and enjoy shopping while experiencing a piece of history.
